Clinical QuickieLiver/GI

Lipase — Elevated Lipase ≠ Automatically Pancreatitis

Lipase supports pancreatitis only when it fits the syndrome.

Use diagnostic context

Acute pancreatitis is diagnosed from a combination of characteristic pain, pancreatic enzyme elevation, and/or compatible imaging — not lipase alone.

Magnitude matters, but so does the patient

Mild lipase elevations occur in renal dysfunction, GI disease, critical illness, medications, and other nonpancreatic conditions.

A normal-ish value does not erase the story

Timing, hypertriglyceridemia, and delayed presentation can complicate enzyme interpretation.

Search for etiology once pancreatitis is plausible

Gallstones, alcohol, hypertriglyceridemia, medications, procedures, and less common causes shape management and recurrence prevention.
