Hyperglycemia vs Hypoglycemia

The glucose number matters — but the symptoms, medications and mechanism matter more.

Hyperglycemia: ask why now

Missed medication, steroids, infection, dehydration, stress physiology and diabetes progression are common triggers.

Hypoglycemia: identify the drug and timing

Insulin and sulfonylureas are common culprits; poor intake, alcohol, renal dysfunction and medication changes increase risk.

Know the dangerous syndromes

DKA can occur with only modest glucose in selected patients, especially with SGLT2 inhibitors. HHS is marked by severe hyperglycemia and hyperosmolar physiology.

Prevent recurrence

Treating one low or one high is not enough. Adjust the regimen, intake, monitoring and precipitating factors.
