Fungal Skin Infections

Name the site before choosing the treatment.

Dermatophytes follow keratinized tissue

Tinea corporis, pedis, cruris, capitis, and onychomycosis differ by site and treatment requirements.

Candida prefers moist folds

Intertriginous erythema with satellite papules/pustules can suggest candidal involvement, but irritant intertrigo can coexist.

Steroids can disguise fungal disease

Topical corticosteroid use can alter morphology and allow dermatophyte infection to spread — tinea incognito.

Confirm when the pattern is uncertain

KOH microscopy or other targeted testing can prevent prolonged treatment of eczema, psoriasis, or another mimic as 'fungus.'
