eGFR
One eGFR does not equal CKD.
eGFR Estimates Filtration
It is usually creatinine-based and becomes less reliable when creatinine generation is atypical or kidney function is changing rapidly.
eGFR is an estimate — not a direct measurement of filtration.
CKD Requires Chronicity
A single low eGFR during acute illness does not establish CKD.
Chronic kidney abnormalities must persist for at least 3 months.
Pair eGFR With Albuminuria
GFR category and urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio together provide a much better picture of kidney disease and risk.
Neither alone tells the full story.
Normal-ish Filtration Does Not Exclude Kidney Disease
Persistent albuminuria or another marker of kidney damage can establish CKD even when eGFR remains above 60.
Don't rely on eGFR alone to rule out significant kidney disease.
