Contact Dermatitis vs Atopic Dermatitis

Distribution and exposure history often separate them.

Contact dermatitis follows exposure

Irritant disease reflects direct barrier injury; allergic contact dermatitis is a delayed hypersensitivity reaction. Borders and exposure pattern can be revealing.

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic barrier disease

Pruritic relapsing eczema with typical age-dependent distribution and atopic history supports the diagnosis.

Treat the barrier and inflammation

Trigger avoidance, emollients, and appropriately selected topical anti-inflammatory therapy are core strategies.

Look for secondary infection or alternate diagnoses

Crusting, weeping, pain, pustules, treatment failure, or atypical distribution should prompt reassessment.
